Winter Comfort: How to Stay Warm and Save on Heating Bills

Tips to stay comfortable while also saving money on your heating bills this winter

As you step outside on this blustery winter morning, it becomes apparent that winter is in full swing. The mere thought of snuggling up indoors in a warm and cozy setting is certainly delightful, but the accompanying utility bills can give anyone the shivers. With costs rising across the board, it's concerning to realize that a substantial portion of your monthly bills is attributed to heating your home during the winter months. If you're anything like me, you're likely eager to learn where you can cut corners and save those hard-earned pennies.

Here are a few simple tips to stay comfortable while also saving money on your heating bills this winter:

1. Make sure you’re changing your furnace filters regularly

With a dirty filter, your furnace won't operate as efficiently as it could, and the more energy your furnace uses, the more expensive its operation will be. Filters should be replaced every one to three months.

2. Turn down your thermostat

Although it might seem simple, even a few degrees can have an impact on your heating costs. It is beneficial to lower that temperature, especially before night or during times when no one is home. There are programmable thermostats that allow you to get home to a warm house without having to heat it while you're away.

3. Reverse your ceiling fans

Everyone is aware that heat rises. Maintaining a clockwise rotation on your fan will force warm air back down into the space.

4. Take advantage of sunlight

Despite the fact that the sun is less intense in the winter, be careful to let the light in by opening your curtains and blinds. Also, it might be a welcome contrast from the gloomy winter months. To help keep the heat generated throughout the day, remember to close them at night. (Even switching to thicker, more insulating drapes during the winter can make a difference!)

5. Bundle up

In the cold, be cautious to layer your clothing. Get out the leggings, long sleeve shirts, sweaters, cozy socks, and pajamas! You may significantly increase your sense of comfort without turning on the thermostat by wearing warmer clothing. Get those blankets as well! There aren't many things better than curling up with a good book and a warm fleece blanket (or watching the newest Netflix, if that’s your thing).

6. Sip on something hot

Although I enjoy iced coffee just as much as the next person, it does little to keep me warm in the winter. Think about substituting hot tea, coffee, or hot chocolate for cold beverages! Yum!

Another delicious (and healthy) alternative for keeping warm throughout the winter is a bowl of homemade soup.

7. Unblock your vents

Paying for the bottom of your bed or the back of your couch to be heated serves no purpose. When feasible, try to clear any obstructions from vents, even if it requires moving some furniture.

8. Consider replacing an old furnace

Although upgrading to a more efficient furnace may seem like a frightening expenditure, if your furnace is very old, it can be worthwhile because you will end up saving money in the long term.
